DID YOU KNOW | Why is Carbon So Important?
Several gases cause climate change – these are called greenhouse gases. Carbon Dioxide is the most abundant greenhouse gas in our atmosphere and whilst it occurs naturally, our human activity has added too much – for too long. Globally we add 51 billion tonnes per year, and this is causing great damage to the ozone layer and directly causing global warming across the world.
Carbon Dioxide, simply referred to as ‘carbon’, is released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels (gas, oil, and coal) are burnt to release their energy e.g. petrol and diesel are made from oil which means vehicles using these two fuels release carbon into our atmosphere.
Therefore, reducing carbon from our lives, transport, and the economy is very important and why the term ‘carbon footprint’ is used to refer to a person’s or business’ carbon emissions.
