Her mine heat work has featured on Country File, The One Show, ITV Tonight and Channel 4 news and she has received awards from the Geological Society and The Energy Institute for her work.
Lucy Allis is the current Local Authorities Climate Action Coordinator at the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. She works collaboratively with Local Authorities, National Parks and wider partners in a range of areas of net zero including delivery of York and North Yorkshire’s Routemap to Carbon Negative, building retrofit and community climate action. Her background includes a Masters degree in Sustainability Studies and a role as a Sustainability Projects Coordinator for an environmental C.I.C.

Lora holds a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard and brings a holistic perspective to sustainability advice drawing on her experience in town planning, affordable housing development, data centres, sustainability consulting, Head of ESG at a UK investment manager and engineering.
With 25 years of experience managing infrastructure projects in the private sector, Adam leads the design of new schemes and contract development advisory services for LCCC. Supporting the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero on new scheme design based on the success of the CfD and building operational contracts that align with the overall Net-Zero strategy and the decarbanisation of the UK’s electricity network.
Andy is the senior product manager for the domestic heat pump products at Groupe Atlantic UK (Ideal Heating). With over 12 years’ experience in the UK heat pump industry, Andy and his team are responsible for managing and developing Ideal Heating’s UK and ROI heat pump product portfolio.
Jocelyne Fleming is the Policy & Public Affairs Officer for Scotland at the Chartered Institute of Building. Here, she leads the organisation’s work advocating in the public interest on all issues relating to the built environment and construction with policymakers and key stakeholders across Scotland. Her recent work has focussed on cladding remediation, building safety and maintenance, retrofit, and addressing the skills shortages in the construction sector. Jocelyne is also undertaking a PhD in Urban Studies at the University of Glasgow, where she previously obtained her MSc in Public & Urban Policy.
Mike Foster is CEO of Energy and Utilities Alliance, a not-for-profit trade association based in the West Midlands. He holds a degree in economics, a post-graduate certificate in education and is a Chartered Management Accountant. Having started work in the car industry, he taught accountancy, economics and statistics for six years before becoming MP for Worcester (1997-2010). He served as a Minister for four years, under both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, latterly as Minister for International Development. Before heading up EUA, he was Head of Communications at the international charity WaterAid.
Seamus Garvey is a Professor of Mechanical at the University of Nottingham and an expert in the roles that energy storage solutions will achieve in net zero energy systems. He has been passionately vocal over almost 20 years on the elucidation of how mechanical energy storage can and will play a major role in the future and he leads a Task under the IEA Technology Collaboration Program on Energy Storage focused on medium-duration solutions.
Apostolos holds a Master of Science in Energy, Environmental Technology and Economics from City University London and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from University of Athens. He has more than 10 years' experience within the energy sector. Apostolos is responsible for managing the Energy Institute’s renowned and market-leading Energy Institute’s energy and carbon management training portfolio. His responsibilities include content development, quality assurance and business development of the EI’s energy and carbon management training products and services. He has designed and developed the EI’s 3-Level energy management training framework covering more than 40 different training courses and supporting thousands of energy professionals across the UK and the world over the years. He currently focuses on expanding the EI's training portfolio to support the industry's required transition to a low carbon system/economy, Apostolos has successfully project managed the development and delivery of bespoke training courses and products for a wide range of organisations in the UK, Middle East, Africa and South East Asia. He leads the project management of the EI’s own Net Zero journey and has developed numerous energy management publications for the Energy Institute. He develops quality processes and procedures and oversees their use across the EI’s training team.
I am the Policy Manager here at ACE and have worked with the organisation for nearly 2 years now. I am passionate about my home in the North East and use this drive to advocate for regional development and opportunity across the UK. Working with ACE members, we help shape policy and decisions made by government and stakeholders to promote sustainable and inclusive development. I’ve been in policy for around 15 years, both at the North East Combined Authority shaping and rolling out their Skills Strategy for the region, and before that working in Further Education policy, advocating for technical education that drives opportunity and aspiration of learners of all ages.
Sam Hall is the Director of Conservative Environment Network, the independent forum for conservatives in the UK and around the world who support net zero, nature restoration, and resource security. Sam joined CEN after having served as a Policy Adviser to Michael Gove when he was Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. He was also the Head of Research at the liberal conservative think tank Bright Blue, leading their work on energy and the environment and authoring several policy reports.
Ruth leads the CCSA, overseeing its London and Brussels offices and representing its 100+ members to UK and EU level decision-makers. Ruth joined the CCSA in October 2021 following a public sector career spanning almost two decades. Selected for the first cohort of the Future Leaders Programme at the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change, Ruth managed delivery of the Electricity Market Reform White Paper and subsequent Energy Act 2013 to drive investment in renewable electricity. Ruth went on to set up the Low Carbon Contracts Company, where, as Director of Strategy & Development, she oversaw implementation of two key features of the UK's electricity market – the CfD and Capacity Market – and the company’s development into a trusted advisor to government on decarbonisation. From 2008-2010, Ruth led UK's negotiation of the EU Directive on CO2 storage and its international CCS policy, holding vice-chair roles in the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum and the Zero Emissions Platform. Prior to working in energy, Ruth was in the Civil Service Fast Stream, as a Financial Services Strategy adviser at HM Treasury and an economic adviser for the City of London Corporation.
Nerea manages the hydrogen research program at LCP Delta, with a focus on advancing hydrogen activities across Europe. Through her work, she develops market intelligence reports, models and forecasts, and engages with stakeholders across the whole hydrogen value chain – including storage operators – to understand the realities the sector is facing. Nerea holds a MEng in Mechanical Engineering with Renewable Energy from the University of Edinburgh.
Paul Hodgson is a rail professional with over 20 years’ experience in senior engineering and management roles. Paul is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the IET and attained his PhD from the Open University in 2012. The PhD research project drew on his Paul’s engineering expertise to develop a transit-solution model based around a modern technology guided bus network, after first arguing the cost and environmental benefits that were equitable to light rail. The understanding of real-world systems in application and the more theoretical, academic approach has allowed a balanced view to be formed on rail and other transit systems.
Andy is a Chartered Electrical Engineer, working at GSK for 16 years across manufacturing, R&D and commercial estate. He has delivered significant energy and water reductions across the business over the years and is now focussing on delivering carbon net zero objectives across GSK’s R&D portfolio. Andy is passionate about sustainability. He has recently installed solar PV and Tesla battery at home, Stevenage, UK. He is married with 4 children and he enjoys cycling playing tennis, badminton and clarinet in his spare time .
With over 25 years’ experience in the Building Services sector, including consultancy, design and contracting, Jeff plays a key role within Baxi Heating responsible for policy and legislative advocacy. Jeff has a wealth of technical, commercial, and legislative knowledge relating the residential and commercial building services sector, including low and zero carbon technologies In his current role Jeff is widely involved in setting the agenda regarding legislation and policy for the heating sector, regularly representing both Baxi Heating and the wider industry at Government and trade body meetings to offer in depth advice and analysis.
Belinda leads multiple energy projects, including GB’s largest minewater heat network through Gateshead Energy Company, using water from flooded mines to heat homes and other buildings. She also leads on connections into new-build housing and a pilot scheme to connect in to existing low-rise housing, to accelerate the growth of heat networks and low-carbon solutions across a variety of tenures.
Mark’s work focuses on the decarbonisation of energy systems, specifically the role of geosciences in low-carbon energy systems and the use and application of seismic reflection data to understand geological processes. Having led geoscience projects across academia and industry, he is currently involved in a diverse range of applied research projects, spanning geothermal energy, energy storage, and carbon capture storage.
Ian Jackson has over forty years’ experience in electricity production, including power station plant operations, energy trading and economic regulation. The latter, involving the regulation of competition in generation and supply, renewable energy, decentralised generation and security of supply. More recently Ian has brought his experience to the Society of Operations Engineer’s work on reducing emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere resulting from operation of plant and equipment. The focus being to secure that all actions to reduce such emissions are done safely, efficiently, sustainably and in an ethical manner. He has also been a member of the Engineering Ethics Co-ordination Group, which is action-oriented group overseeing, reporting on, and coordinating ethics related work across the engineering profession.
Susanna has a Masters in Climate Change Policy. Susanna (PIEMA) is an accredited IEMA Practitioner, trained B Corp Consultant and the Lead Consultant for Sustainability and ESG at Beyondly. A true advocate for the importance of sustainability and environmental protection and conservation, Susanna delivers services such as ESOS, SECR, ESG, and carbon footprint assessments for hundreds of organisations across a wide range of industries.
Celtic Sea Power is an arm’s length Cornwall Council company promoting the industrial development of Cornwall’s floating offshore wind (FLOW) sector. In Steve’s 1st career, his experience included diving, offshore aviation, underwater operations, fishery protection, command of 4 ships and senior appointments in MoD’s policy departments and Afghanistan. In his 2nd career, he worked for Mojo Maritime Ltd and James Fisher Group plc, on FLOW, wave and tidal energy projects. Steve is a also Chair of the Celtic Sea Cluster and a Fellow of the Nautical Institute and Institute of Marine Engineers, Scientists and Technologists.
Chris’ working life has been varied, initially starting out in Mechanical Engineering by doing an apprenticeship, before moving into site-based Environment Management. This was part of 22 years working for a Ductile Iron foundries group, followed by a couple of years in land remediation & sales, then 11 years in the food and drink sector, in various Environment, Energy and Health, Safety and Environment management roles. Currently Chris is the Group Environment and Energy Manager for Volac International Ltd, a world leader in Dairy based nutrition for both humans and animals. He has been with Volac since June 2022 and in the two years since, the company has been on a journey around the next steps in its Sustainability story, especially on carbon reporting and reduction. That is what led Chris on to completing the ‘Net Zero for Professionals’ course, with the Energy institute. With already being an Associate Member of the institute, it made perfect sense to attend this course to hone his existing knowledge base. When not at work, Chris just loves being outside, whether that’s walking, cycling, angling, or something else, there is no place he would rather be.
Peter is primarily Head of Supply Chain and Procurement in the Power Division covering sites in UK and Europe. Created and led a bold Local Procurement team that cut costs and lead times without compromise to the customer for planned and unplanned outages. Now supporting the fast-developing carbon capture market across the UK and Europe, with projects that include Energy from Waste, biomass and cement.
Damien is a lifelong industry professional with 36 years of experience. Throughout his career, he has consistently operated within the engineering sector and began focusing on green and renewable energy projects around 2006 while based in the Middle East. His first notable project was Masdar City, the world's first purpose-built green city near Abu Dhabi. Since then, Damien has supported customers across various energy sectors, including nuclear, wind (both onshore and offshore) and solar. For nearly three years, Damien has been working with Manpower. In his operational and strategic role, he oversees the engineering group that operates across the UK. His responsibilities include developing specialist engineering desks from multiple locations and advancing the company's presence in the green and renewable energy sector. Damien drives his teams to cultivate new clients, ensures adherence to unique business processes and provides comprehensive reports on financials and activity levels. Damien is passionate about creating a greener future, believing it is crucial for a healthier and cleaner world. He advocates for significant strides towards Net Zero, emphasising the potential to enhance quality of life, develop skills, increase workplace opportunities and improve earning potential. Lydia Malley is Head of EI Academy at the Energy Institute, the chartered professional membership body for people who work across the world of energy. She is working to attract, develop and equip the diverse future energy workforce with the skills they’ll need to accelerate a just global energy transition to net zero. Her current role oversees the training courses that the Energy Institute offers across the breadth of the energy sector, but she has spent almost a decade at the Energy Institute, across various different roles and departments, enjoying a varied career. She is passionate about upskilling and empowering others.
JJ will address the expanding role that stationary batteries can serve in electricity grid support for times (mainly) below 10 hours. John-Joseph Marie works as Principal Analyst for Energy Storage at The Faraday Institution. His responsibilities include authoring Insights and other Faraday Institution reports, as well as carrying out techno-economic modelling work. Prior to joining the Faraday Institution, he completed his PhD on Lithium-ion cathode development at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Prof. Peter Bruce. His passions include the development of energy storage technologies and sustainable development.

Chinedu Nevo recently completed his PhD at the Open University. His research explored the strategies adopted by renewable energy startups operating in African emerging markets characterized by institutional weaknesses and complexities in the business environment. He has also worked on an ad-hoc basis as a consultant for the Zambian Electricity Mobility Innovation Alliance (ZEMIA) on a project aimed at introducing electric vehicles into Zambia’s public transport system. He is currently employed by Sheffield Hallam University to work as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) associate on an innovative project funded by the UK Research and Innovation. The project is aimed at designing and implementing a sustainable revenue model for Tempus Novo – an award-winning UK charity. His research interests include renewable energy, sustainability, sustainable development, clean transportation, and climate change.

Hitachi ZeroCarbon is Hitachi's fleet decarbonisation business, enabling the zero carbon transition and optimisation of commercial fleets and public transportation.
Antoine is Head of Retrofit Credits at HACT. Antoine has been leading the introduction and growth of the award-winning Retrofit Credits programme since its inception in 2022. He plays a key role in the continued development of Retrofit Credits and move the programme forward to increase its meaningful impact in the sector to decarbonise homes and support the people who live in them, especially at a time when the environment and carbon emission reduction are one of the key factors, both in improving homes for residents and our journey towards its net-zero goals.
Raya Peterson leads Ramboll’s global Offshore Wind project development and advisory team with a strong focus on the UK, the US and Central Europe. He has more than 15 years of experience from successfully leading and supporting diverse technical and commercial advisory services for investors, lenders and developers within the wind energy sector. Raya has been involved in over 20 realised offshore projects and gained detailed understanding of business cases, costs, regulatory frameworks, market standards and industry best practices.
Stephen Potter is Emeritus Professor of Transport Strategy. He joined the OU in 1974 as one of its first PhD research students. His PhD was on the design of transport systems for new towns. His research has included exploring the human and institutional aspects of transport innovation, the diffusion of cleaner vehicle technologies, low carbon transport systems and more sustainable travel behaviours. He has played a key role in developing the University’s links with the Milton Keynes Low Carbon and Smart City programmes. He has written on a number of design and innovation modules, including T317 Innovation: designing for change, T219 Environmental Management, U116 Environment: journeys through a changing world and TB801 Technology and Innovation Management.

Keith began his career with 6 years at Rolls-Royce followed by 2 years in oil and gas. Becoming an academic at Imperial College in 1992, his patents on microturbines underpinned Turbo Power Systems. Appointed Chair at City University of London in 2010, breakthrough research on flywheel energy storage led to Levistor Ltd, CTO role and RAEng Enterprise Fellowship.
Megha Shah serves as the Head of the CCUS and H2 team at Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC). Her team at LCCC has been involved in developing contracts for CCUS (Dispatchable Power, Industrial Carbon Capture including Waste, and H2 (Electrolytic and CCUS enabled) business models. These contracts have been developed in close collaboration with the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero and will be managed by Megha's team once they are signed. Prior to her role at LCCC, Megha had experience in project and market development, construction, startups, and the development of Waste infrastructure through PFI / PPP contracts.
Chris recently joined Lanchester Wines group after attaining his MSc in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Technologies for which Lanchester Wines was the subject of his dissertation. He is responsible for adopting heat pumps, amongst a wide range of other sustainable technologies, after the recent departure from the group by Adam Black (Energy Director) who played a key role in paving the way for minewater heating schemes in the UK.
As a Chartered Resource and Waste Manager, I am passionate about turning waste into resources and creating networks and systems that enable resource efficiency and closing gaps towards a more circular resource economy. I help organisations in manufacturing and service industries in the UK and overseas, embracing a multidisciplinary curiosity with a focus on practical solutions based on data and evidence-based decision making.
Chris leads advisory on carbon capture and storage for Baringa, an expert consultancy. He has worked in leadership roles across the UK’s main energy institutions on energy and climate policy, regulatory policy and market design, as well as system operation and network development. Recently, Chris was in the leadership team delivering the UK government’s CCUS cluster sequencing programme. He led the policy development and deal for the first power plant with carbon capture in the UK, advised on the government’s review of electricity market arrangements and led international engagement with governments around the world on CCS policy.
Robin Tucker is a Co-Chair of the Oxford UK based Coalition for Healthy Streets and Active Travel. He is a Trustee of two charities; Cycling UK and Earth Trust. His career started in business, at Oliver Wyman consulting in transport, telecoms and other sectors, and then at Vodafone. He then moved to Natural England, which reignited his environmental interests. On leaving in 2010, he founded his own management consulting firm, started promoting business sustainability, and started campaigning for active travel in 2015.
Miguel Valdez is Lecturer in Technology and Innovation Management. He began his career as a software engineer and technology journalist, joined the OU in 2010 as a PhD student, became a Research Associate and now works full time in research and teaching related to innovation in urban technologies with attention to planning, governance and sense-making in support of more sustainable, equitable and inclusive ways of living in cities. His current research investigates the urban impact and implications of autonomous robots deployed in urban environments, as well as the urban implications of the data and networking infrastructures required to support data-hungry robots, connected and autonomous vehicles and smart city technologies. Miguel has co-authored postgraduate modules T803 Researching in Context, TB801 Technology and Innovation Management and T849 Strategic Capabilities for Technological innovation.
Andrew Varnava is a Lead Contract Manager in the Electricity CfD team at the Low Carbon Contracts Company. His background is in commercial contract management working across the higher education, retail and charity industries for the last 15 years. In his current role, along with his colleagues, he is accountable for the management of 200+ renewable CfD contracts.
Gareth has 20 years of experience developing and delivering energy, climate and net zero strategies. He has worked with multinationals such as Sainsbury’s, Shell, Airbus, BAE systems; SMEs for example in the hospitality and manufacturing sectors; public sector organisations such as the NHS and local authorities; and third sector organisations such as Business Improvement Districts and community led groups energy and climate groups. Gareth has acted as a trainer for the Energy Institute since 2016, both developing and delivering courses. He also developed and helps track and deliver the Energy Institute’s Net Zero strategy and associated Science Based Targets. He has a PhD on the design and implementation of carbon markets and has published on the topic, as well as acted as a visiting fellow at the University of Bath. Gareth is an ESOS lead Assessor and a Chartered Energy Manager. Most recently, Gareth has become a Certified Passivhaus consultant, working on Passivhaus projects in the NHS, for multi residential blocks, and on Passivhaus Schools. Gareth is committed to the delivery of net zero and is well placed to tackle it as a strategist, engineer and experienced energy manager.
Emma became the Chief Executive of the Society for the Environment, the Chartered Organisation responsible for registering environmental professionals, in 2015. Emma is a Chartered Environmentalist and Fellow of IOM3 as well as a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and a graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10k Small Business Programme. As well as the Chair of the IOM3 Sustainability Development Group (SDG), Emma is a member of the UK Government’s Green Apprenticeships Advisory Panel (GAAP) and a Board Member of the Future Water Association.
Mark has been working in the heating industry for over forty years and has a wealth of expertise and knowledge on home heating solutions. Having held a variety of roles across many European markets, including the UK, Ireland, Germany and Turkey, Mark has worked on numerous projects developing technology for sustainable heating solutions, such as heat pumps, for residential and commercial applications. Mark began his career as an apprentice service engineer with British Gas South Eastern and has since held roles in marketing, product management, training and external affairs. He now heads up the training and product management team at Vaillant. Working his way up from an Apprentice Gas Engineer to Director of Training and Technology has allowed Mark to understand all levels of domestic and commercial heating from the products to the application and their wider impact on the environment.
Adam Williams is Head of Policy, Regulation and Business Development at the Low Carbon Contracts Company, and has worked in the energy industry for almost 15 years. In his current role he leads the team of policy experts that provide credible, impartial advice to the government to enhance the existing renewable subsidy regimes, as well as developing new schemes such as hydrogen transport, with the ultimate goal of facilitating the delivery of net zero.

Liz has over 10 years' experience gained through academic research and the delivery of carbon and sustainability support to customers in multiple industry sectors. Liz specialises in carbon and energy measurement and reduction at organisational, supply chain and product level. Liz is a member of the IEMA Climate Change and Energy Steering Group.
Öznur Yurt joined the faculty of The Open University Business School as a Senior Lecturer in Operations & Supply Chain Management in December 2021. She holds two PhD’s, from Izmir University of Economics in Turkey, and from University of Miskolc (Hungary). Prior to joining academia, she worked in the banking industry as a Management Trainee in Marketing. Her research interests lie at the intersection of supply chain management and business-to-business marketing. Her recent research focuses on service supply chains, buyer-supplier relations, food supply chains and sustainable supply chains. Öznur leads the OU Open Societal Challenge “Exploring potential opportunities of servitization for environmentally sustainable transportation networks in the UK”.
