Net Zero Week is the UK’s official national awareness week, tackling all things net zero. The government and industry backed initiative is marking its fifth anniversary in July 2025. To celebrate this milestone, we are bringing a delegation of net zero stakeholders to Parliament to curate events for MPs and policy aides, Peers and civil servants.
Building a green economy is a win-win endeavour for people, businesses and communities. Investment in great research and innovation enables reductions in carbon emissions while helping people to lead better lives. Our science means we know what we need to do to reach a low-carbon economy, and how to do this while delivering high-skill, high-wage jobs, warm homes, good health, better transport and smarter public services. This panel will explore how the UK’s world leading R&I ecosystem is helping to deliver a sustainable and equitable Net Zero future, driving prosperity and improving lives and livelihoods for communities across the UK.
Join Net Zero Week in Parliament’s sponsoring MPs, partners, sponsors and special guests for an evening of food, drink and networking in the heart of Westminster.
The UK’s dramatic shift from carbon-based electricity to renewable energy presents huge challenges for the national grid to match supply with demand. We spend over £1bn pa switching off wind farms because of insufficient demand for the power. Energy storage products, such as hot water cylinders, are needed to bank the excess energy when it is generated and therefore reduce peak demand that results in carbon emissions. If the nine million hot water cylinders in the UK were smart connected to the national grid, using existing technology, they unlock 23GWh of green daily energy storage to reduce CO2 emissions.
Energy storage technologies have emerged as a cornerstone of modern energy systems that can enhance system flexibility, reliability and efficiency. Energy storage solutions of different scales (20kW to 10MW), durations (seconds to weeks/months), types (electrochemical, thermal, thermochemical, mechanical) and modalities (stationary or mobile) will have a range of applications across industries and networks. This will significantly impact the electricity, gas and heat network infrastructure, with increased focus on resilience against climate events and economic impacts. With Supergen industry-focussed hubs serving as focal points for energy research across the UK, the session will bring together key experts across the sector.
As part of Net Zero Week, the Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) is hosting a roundtable at Westminster to explore How can the UK lead the world in Low Carbon Fuels? Clean fuels—including hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, SAF, and more—are vital to achieving Net Zero and unlocking green growth. ERA, with a strong track record in research, innovation, and collaboration, is well-positioned to spearhead a national response. ERA invites MPs, Peers, businesses, and academia to help shape the focus of a proposed national centre of excellence—driving forward clean fuel production, standards, supply chains, policy, and workforce training.
This roundtable event will explore how policymakers and practitioners can work together to collectively achieve both the UK’s climate goals and economic growth, to secure sustainable development. As a coalition of professional bodies and learned societies, we know first-hand of the widespread green skills challenges that currently act as barriers to opportunity. During this event we will elaborate on the skills needed to deliver our environmental priorities for policymakers, presenting solutions from across the built environment, landscape, ecology, resource management, engineering and environmental management disciplines. Please join us for an insightful roundtable discussion, to be followed by networking and refreshments.
Join the GivEnergy expert panel as they explore how Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can help organisations reduce Scope 2 CO2 emissions by up to 60% and lower energy bills by up to 75%. The discussion will cover energy security, cyber protection, the carbon intensity of the grid, and how organisations can fund energy storage solutions with zero upfront cost. Ideal for schools, NHS trusts, local authorities, the Ministry of Defence, and commercial businesses, this session will offer practical, cashflow-positive pathways to achieving Net Zero.
In a rapidly changing energy landscape, with new demands being placed on it, the UK is at a critical juncture as it embarks on a journey to upgrade its energy infrastructure for future generations. Not only will the grid need extra capacity as coal fired power stations continue to be decommissioned, energy intensive industries powering the tech and AI revolution will require their own energy sources to power our future economy. This roundtable will explore how new nuclear – both gigawatt and small modular reactors – can play a major role in providing always-on baseload energy that is clean, secure and affordable.
Meet the climate experts behind the evidence! Join the Climate Evidence Unit from the University of Leeds to explore how robust, timely evidence can inform international leadership on climate change, harness economic and health benefits from climate action, enhance national resilience and deliver a thriving net zero economy.
